Background of the Study (200 words)
Gender-based violence (GBV) is typically discussed with a focus on female victims; however, male victims also endure forms of violence that are often neglected. In Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, emerging evidence indicates that men face specific challenges related to GBV, including social stigma and underreporting (Oghenekaro, 2023). Cultural norms that valorize masculinity contribute to the marginalization of male victims, who often find limited support from both formal institutions and community networks (Emeka, 2024). The literature reveals that while female GBV has received considerable attention, the experiences of male victims remain inadequately addressed in policy and practice (Ifeanyi, 2025). This study examines the prevalence, forms, and consequences of GBV against men, considering how gender stereotypes and cultural expectations shape their experiences. By employing both quantitative and qualitative methods, the research aims to uncover hidden patterns of violence and advocate for inclusive support systems. The discussion further links local observations to global trends in understanding GBV as a multifaceted phenomenon that affects all genders (Chinedu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Ughelli North, male victims of gender-based violence are frequently marginalized by societal norms that stigmatize vulnerability. This marginalization results in underreporting, insufficient legal protection, and a lack of targeted support services (Obiageli, 2024). The prevailing focus on female victims has left a critical gap in addressing the unique experiences of male GBV survivors. This study aims to investigate the extent and nature of violence against men, providing insights into the systemic issues that hinder effective redress and support for this often-overlooked group (Nnamdi, 2025).
